In short: abandoned cart recovery in CloudCart has two parts. Analytics shows the rates: abandoned carts, abandoned checkouts, the Cart → Initiated Checkout → Orders funnel and the conversion rate. Orders → Abandoned lists the carts themselves. The automatic reminder email with a restore link is switched on in Settings → Cart and checkout and goes out 30 to 180 minutes after the last change to the cart.
Below are the screens and the order of setup, with names as they appear in the admin of CloudCart, the ecommerce platform from Bulgaria (see the Abandoned carts and Analytics pages). Strategy is in abandoned carts: 9 ways to bring them back.
What the abandoned cart reports in CloudCart show
The abandoned cart reports in CloudCart are four cards in Analytics that show at which step your store loses the shopper. An abandoned cart is a cart with at least one product whose owner never reached the checkout page. An abandoned checkout is a visit to the checkout page that did not end in an order.
| Card in Analytics | What it counts | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abandoned carts | Carts that never reached checkout | 100 − (carts at checkout ÷ all carts × 100) | 400 carts, 250 reach checkout: 37.5% |
| Abandoned checkouts | Checkouts started without an order | (checkouts − orders) ÷ checkouts × 100 | 250 checkouts, 160 orders: 36% |
| Conversion Funnel | Cart, Initiated Checkout and Orders stacked | Count at each step and share of the previous one | 400 → 250 → 160 |
| Conversion Rate | Visits that ended in an order | orders ÷ visits × 100 | 160 orders from 8,000 visits: 2% |
The first two cards compare you with the previous period and your industry average, with separate mobile and desktop rows. Data refreshes once an hour.
Who the reports help and when to look at them
The reports help any store with a few dozen carts a week or more. Look at them in three situations:
- After a change to checkout. Compare the week before with the week after.
- Before a big campaign. Before Black Friday, find the step where you lose the most and fix it first, so the same ad traffic ends in more orders. Preparation is on the Black Friday page.
- When ads bring visits but no orders. Then the problem is in the store, and more ad spend will not solve it.
Say your store has 500 carts a month at €50 each and the abandoned cart rate drops from 40% to 35%. That is 25 more carts reaching checkout. With 64% of checkouts completed, that means about 16 more orders and €800 more revenue a month from the same traffic.
Where to find abandoned carts in the admin
The abandoned carts themselves are in Orders → Abandoned, and the rates are in Analytics. A cart enters the list once it has been inactive longer than the interval in your settings (60 minutes by default).
The list: 4 columns and 4 filters
The columns are Abandoned # (number, customer, group and order count), Date updated, Products and Quantity. The filters are customer, customer group, date added and date of last change. Top right, a counter shows how many abandoned cart emails have gone out in the current plan year. The bulk actions are Send restore link and Delete. There is no filter by cart value and no CSV export.
One cart: products, customer and the link button
Click a row to open the cart: products and total on the left, the customer or subscriber on the right. The Send restore link button sends the link, and "Restore link last sent" then shows the date and time.
The cart funnel: how to read it and what cart conversion rate means
The cart funnel shows how many shoppers move from Cart to Initiated Checkout and from there to Orders. The biggest gap between two neighbouring bars is where to start working. Cart conversion rate is the share of carts that end in an order: Orders ÷ Cart × 100. In the example, 160 orders from 400 carts is 40%.
The Conversion Rate card measures orders against all visits, so a store can have 2% conversion and 40% cart conversion at once. Together they show whether the problem is the catalog (few carts) or checkout (carts without orders).
| Where the big gap is | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cart → Initiated Checkout | Something in the cart stops the shopper | Shipping price, the amount left to free shipping, the checkout button, the cart on a phone |
| Initiated Checkout → Orders | The shopper decided but gave up on the form | Required sign-up, number of fields, payment methods, courier offices and lockers |
| Mobile much worse than desktop | Checkout is awkward on a small screen | Go through checkout on a phone with a real card and address |
How to read the numbers without being misled:
- Look at a week or a month. A shopper who adds a product at 10:00 and reaches checkout at 11:00 counts as abandoned in the first hour, so hourly values come out higher.
- Check the statuses under the gear icon. "Order statuses that will be included in the analyses" decides which orders count in the third step, in abandoned checkouts and in the conversion rate. If you remove "Pending", unpaid cash on delivery (COD) orders disappear and abandoned checkouts look higher than they are. In Bulgaria, where many shoppers still pay the courier on delivery, this matters a lot.
- Tablets count as desktop. Admin sessions are excluded, so your test orders do not move the numbers.
Why shoppers abandon the cart and where you see it in the funnel
The average documented cart abandonment rate worldwide is 70.22%, based on 50 studies collected by the Baymard Institute. Some are not lost orders: 42% of shoppers were just browsing. The other reasons leave a trace at a specific funnel step.
| Reason (Baymard) | Share | Where it shows | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra costs (shipping, fees) too high | 40% | Cart → Initiated Checkout | Shipping price in the cart and the free shipping threshold |
| Delivery too slow | 20% | Initiated Checkout → Orders | Delivery times and office or locker pickup with Econt, Speedy and BOX NOW, the main Bulgarian courier and locker networks |
| Did not trust the site with card details | 19% | Initiated Checkout → Orders | Payment inside the store's checkout, with familiar wallets |
| Site wanted an account | 18% | Initiated Checkout → Orders | Whether checkout works without an account |
| Checkout too long or complicated | 17% | Initiated Checkout → Orders, mostly mobile | The number of required fields |
| Errors or crashes | 17% | Both steps, suddenly | A spike in the chart after a change to the store |
Baymard also finds that better checkout design lifts the conversion rate of large stores by 35.26% on average. That is why the funnel comes before the ad budget.
Mobile vs desktop: why the mobile funnel is separate
The mobile funnel is separate because shoppers on a phone give up in different places.
- Pick a one-month period. In Analytics set the last 30 days.
- Switch the funnel to Mobile, then to Desktop. Note the share of the previous step for Initiated Checkout and for Orders.
- Compare the two rows in Abandoned checkouts. A gap of more than 10 points points to the form or the payment on mobile.
- Fix one thing and compare after 2 weeks.
What to fix first on a small screen is covered in the guide mobile version of an online store.
How to switch on the automatic abandoned cart email
The automatic email is switched on in Settings → Cart and checkout, in the Abandoned cart reminder box. The platform then checks carts every 3 minutes and sends each abandoned cart an email with a personal restore link.
- Open Settings → Cart and checkout and turn on Abandoned cart reminder. While it is off, only manual sending works.
- Choose the channel in Send abandoned cart reminders via. The option is Email.
- Set the interval in Send abandoned reminder in (minutes). 30, 45, 60, 90 or 180 minutes after the last change to the cart. CloudCart recommends 60.
- Click Save at the top of the page. Every new abandoned cart now gets the email once.
- Check the first sends. After a day, Orders → Abandoned shows "Restore link last sent" on the carts, and the counter goes up.
Note: the email reaches only a registered customer or a subscriber with a confirmed address (unless the email channel allows unconfirmed subscribers). An anonymous visitor is counted in Analytics, but cannot be emailed. The email carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribed shoppers do not receive it.
The EU rule behind the unsubscribe link
Under Article 13 of the EU ePrivacy Directive, marketing email needs prior consent, except that a business that got a customer's address during a sale may market its own similar products, as long as the customer can opt out simply and at no cost in every message (EUR-Lex: Directive 2002/58/EC). Since February 1, 2024 Gmail also requires senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to offer one-click unsubscribe and keep the spam rate below 0.3% (Google: email sender guidelines). Consent forms are covered in GDPR and cookies for an online store.
How to change the email text and what the link does
The email text is edited in Marketing → Channels → Email notifications, on the abandoned cart restore row (abandoned_restore_link): name, subject and content. The subject matters most, because it decides how many people open the email.
The restore link ({$link}) is personal for each cart and opens it with the products inside on any device, with no sign-in. The address comes back only when the shopper is signed in. A discount code in the link applies automatically while it is active; an expired code simply gives no discount. Every send creates a new link and the old one stops working.
One limitation: the global switch for customer email notifications stops this email too.
Second and third reminder: segment and automated campaign
The built-in email goes out once per cart, so the second and third reminders are an automated campaign to a segment of cart abandoners, by email, Viber, SMS or Web Push. Web Push is unlimited on all plans, while Viber and SMS messages are paid separately, per message.
- Create an automated segment. In Marketing → Segments choose Automated and add Cart → Cart abandoned = Abandoned. Marketing Suite holds 50, 100, 500 or 1,000 subscribers from Baby Pack to CC Master.
- Create an automated campaign. In Marketing → Campaigns pick the segment. The sequence has up to 5 steps.
- Set a wait and a channel for each step. An example from the abandoned carts page: Viber after 24 hours, an email with a code after 72 hours.
- Choose exit on order. The shopper leaves the campaign when they order, so no one gets a reminder for something already bought.
- Keep the code for the last step. Shoppers who would order anyway then get a discount less often.
Connecting the channels is covered in Viber Business, SMS, email and Web Push campaigns in CloudCart, and the campaign field by field in email campaign in CloudCart step by step.
How to see how many orders the email brought back
Recovered orders show in Orders with the Recovered source filter: every order placed through the link carries a "recovered" label and the channel that brought it back. Each link also carries utm_campaign=abandoned_restore_link, so recovered revenue shows in Marketing → Dashboard and in Google Analytics, if connected (UTM tracking is on CC Pro and CC Master). The monthly sum: 200 emails and 12 recovered orders at €52 each are €624 of revenue that would have stayed in the carts.
Abandoned cart analysis with an AI assistant, without opening the admin
An AI assistant connected with a PAT (personal access token) reads the same reports and list, and answers in the chat as a table. The CloudCart Admin GraphQL API has queries for the reports (analyticsReport), the carts (abandonedCarts) and the restore link (sendAbandonedCartRestoreEmail). Setup is on the page store run by an AI assistant: one sentence in Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor and a key from "PAT tokens" in the admin.
| Task | In the admin | With an AI assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Abandoned carts over €100 | No value filter, row by row | One sentence, a list with totals |
| Mobile vs desktop funnel | Switch views, note the numbers | Both side by side, with the gap |
| Most abandoned products | Open each cart | A ranked list |
| Manual link to valuable customers | A button in each cart | Shows who it will send to and waits for your "yes" |
Sends through the assistant count against the same plan limit as the admin button.
7 good practices for abandoned carts in CloudCart
- Start with 60 minutes. Shorter catches shoppers still comparing; 180 misses the moment the product is on their mind.
- Collect the email early. A signup form and account sign-in increase the carts you can email at all.
- Look at the funnel weekly. Against last week and your industry.
- Send manually to valuable carts. The button in a cart allows a second send, for example to a repeat customer.
- Watch the counter monthly. The limit is per plan year; check it well before Black Friday.
- Use Aura Chat where shoppers hesitate.
- Measure recovered revenue. The Recovered source filter shows whether the email and campaign pay off.
Mistakes to avoid
- The switch is off. The interval is set, but Abandoned cart reminder is off.
- The segment comes from the template. The "Cart abandoners" template is one-off and does not catch new carts.
- The code is in the first email. Shoppers learn to leave the cart and wait for it.
- The limit runs out quietly. When the year's notifications are used up, the email stops without a warning.
- Waiting with the manual link. Carts are deleted automatically 7 days after the last change.
How many abandoned cart emails each plan includes
The reports and the abandoned cart list are on every plan. The number of emails is counted per year from the plan purchase date; a renewal does not reset it.
| Plan | Per month (billed annually, excl. VAT) | Incomplete orders | Incomplete order notifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby Pack | €14 | yes | 100 |
| Starter Pack | €33 | yes | 500 |
| CC Pro | €83 | yes | 5,000 |
| CC Master | €249 | yes | 10,000 |
The figures are from the plan comparison. Automatic, manual and AI assistant sends share the same limit. CloudCart takes a 0% commission on sales, so the platform takes no cut of a recovered order. The full email series around the cart is in email marketing for an online store.
Frequently asked questions
The carts are in Orders → Abandoned. The rates are in Analytics, in the Abandoned carts, Abandoned checkouts and Conversion Funnel cards.
In Settings → Cart and checkout, turn on Abandoned cart reminder, choose Email and an interval of 30 to 180 minutes, and click Save. Every abandoned cart with a known email gets one email with a restore link.
Cart conversion rate is the share of carts that end in an order: orders ÷ carts × 100. With 400 carts and 160 orders it is 40%.
An abandoned cart never reached the checkout page; an abandoned checkout reached it without an order.
The email goes only to a registered customer or a subscriber with a confirmed address, never to unsubscribed shoppers. It also stops when the switch is off or the yearly plan limit is used up.
Yes: manually with Send restore link in the cart, or with an automated campaign to a Cart abandoned segment by Viber, SMS, email or Web Push that stops when the shopper orders.
The documented average is 70.22% according to the Baymard Institute, including shoppers who are just browsing. A better comparison is your industry average, shown in the Abandoned carts card next to your rate.
Yes. An assistant connected with a PAT reads the list and reports through the Admin GraphQL API and sends a link only after your confirmation.
The reports, the reminder email and the cart funnel are in every CloudCart plan from the first month. Create a store for €1/month for the first 3 months and see this week where you lose shoppers. Questions: support@cloudcart.com.
