In short: product reviews sell because they answer a shopper's doubt in the words of someone who has already bought. A product with five reviews is 270% more likely to be bought than one with none (Spiegel Research Center). The request that works best arrives a few days after delivery, once the customer has used the product, with a link straight to the review form.

Written by the CloudCart team, the Bulgarian ecommerce platform, for stores selling in or from Bulgaria and across the EU. Below: when and how to ask for reviews, how to reply, what to moderate, Google stars, ads, AI answers, EU rules on fake reviews and the setup in CloudCart. CloudCart facts come from the platform documentation and the Campaigns and Pricing pages.

Why product reviews matter for an online store

Product reviews are the strongest social proof an online store has, because the shopper cannot touch the product and looks for confirmation from another buyer. Research by the Spiegel Research Center at Northwestern University found:

  • The first five reviews do the most work. Purchase likelihood with 5 reviews is 270% higher than with none; after the fifth, each review adds much less.
  • Expensive products gain more. Reviews lifted conversion by 380% on a higher-priced product and by 190% on a cheaper one.
  • A perfect 5.0 raises doubts. Purchase likelihood peaks at an average of 4.0 to 4.7 and falls as the rating nears 5.0.
  • Verified buyers rate higher, and a verified buyer badge raised purchase odds by 15%.

The takeaway: aim for at least 5 written reviews from real buyers on each best seller. That matters more than 200 reviews on one product.

How to get more product reviews: 8 steps

More reviews come in when the request arrives after delivery, feels personal and leads straight to the form. Most happy customers never write one because nobody asked at the right moment.

  1. Ask after delivery, not after the order. For cosmetics and food, 5 to 7 days after delivery; for electronics and furniture, 10 to 14 days.
  2. Send an automated email with a link to the form. Write it from a real person, with the product name and photo and one "Rate the product" button.
  3. Ask inside the store. In the customer account, show the products the customer has not rated yet.
  4. Keep the form short. Stars, a title and a comment. Every extra required field loses writers.
  5. Put a card in the parcel. One sentence and a QR code to the product page.
  6. Reply to reviews. Buyers write more willingly when they see the store reads them.
  7. Ask once per product. One reminder is enough; a third email leads to unsubscribes.
  8. Never buy reviews or reward only positive ones. A discount for a review in your store goes to every review whatever the rating, stated clearly. For Google reviews no reward is allowed. See fake reviews.

Important: a review request is a marketing email. Send it only to customers who agreed to emails, and never to anyone who unsubscribed. The whole post-purchase sequence is in email marketing for ecommerce: 7 automated emails.

The request goes through the CloudCart email channel, which also guards your sender reputation. Marketing → Channels → Channels setup → Email card → Reputation shows spam complaints, bounces, opens and clicks. After the first 500 emails the channel pauses itself if complaints pass 0.5%, bounces pass 5% or opens drop below 5%. Building the campaign field by field is in an email campaign in CloudCart step by step.

A sample: subject "Maria, how are you finding the hand cream?"; body "Your parcel arrived a week ago. Other shoppers read reviews like yours before they choose. It takes about a minute."; button "Rate the cream"; signed with a real name from the team.

How to turn on product reviews in CloudCart

Reviews in CloudCart, the Bulgarian ecommerce platform, come from the Product Reviews app, which adds stars, reviews and optional questions and answers to product pages. It is included in all 4 plans (Baby Pack, Starter Pack, CC Pro, CC Master) on pricing.

  1. Install the app in Apps → Product Reviews. Its Enable / Disable button pauses it without losing settings.
  2. Choose who can review. In Settings → Add reviews from, pick "Only purchased the product" (a paid or completed order is required) over "All users".
  3. Extend the review window. Maximum period for leaving a review runs from 1 to 365 days; the default of 7 is too short once the courier takes 2 to 3 days. Set 30 to 60, up to 90 for electronics.
  4. Set up approval. Turn on Approve before publish and Automatic approval of responses, then set Automatically approve a review with a score above to 4 stars (default 5). Reviews of 4 and 5 stars go live at once; 1 to 3 stars wait for you.
  5. Allow replies. Without Allow replies nobody can answer, the store included. Add answers from: "Administrators" or "All users".
  6. Choose what shows. Show product list rating adds stars to categories, Hide rating if no reviews hides empty stars, Sort feedback by date builds more trust than by rating.
  7. Turn on Questions and Answers, with Approve question before publishing if you want to check them first.
  8. Watch the alert. The app adds a "New review added" admin email, so you see every negative review the day it is written.
  9. Add the review invitation. On a dynamic page, the request_review block shows a logged-in customer the products they bought and have not rated, for example on a "My reviews" page.
  10. Launch the automated email. Marketing → Campaigns has post-purchase templates, including a thank-you with a review request. Its review link works without logging in and is valid for one review.

The app also adds segment conditions to Subscribers and segments, such as customers with an order and no review or with an average rating below 3. The request then reaches only people who have not written, and an unhappy customer gets an email from support instead of a promotion.

Limits of built-in reviews

  • Settings apply store-wide, not per product.
  • A review is 1 to 5 stars, a title up to 200 characters and a comment up to 1,000. No photos or video.
  • One review per customer per product. The text cannot be edited, only published, hidden or deleted.
  • Deleting is permanent and removes the replies too. Every change recalculates the product's rating.
  • There is no ready-made import from another platform: use Add new review or the API (see the AI assistant).

Which reviews to publish, hide or delete

Publish every genuine review of the product, negative ones included, and remove only spam, abuse, personal data and text that is not about the product. A deleted critical review makes your rating less credible, and the author can post it on Google instead.

ReviewAction in CloudCartWhy

All reviews sit in Apps → Product Reviews → Reviews, with filters and bulk actions; one customer's reviews also show in Customers → customer details → Reviews, which exposes anyone leaving 1 star on every product.

How to respond to a negative review

Reply to a negative review within 24 hours, publicly and briefly: thank the customer, name the problem, say what you are doing and give a direct contact. The reply is for the next buyers as much as for the author.

  1. Thank them by name. "Thank you for writing, Ivan."
  2. Name the problem in their words. "The jacket runs smaller than the stated size." Skip "any inconvenience".
  3. Explain without excuses. If the size chart is wrong, say so and fix it.
  4. Offer a solution privately. Exchange, return or a new parcel, never with an order number in public.
  5. Give a direct contact of a person on the team.

Example: "Thank you for writing, Ivan. You're right, size L of this model is tighter than the chart, and we've corrected the chart. We've emailed you about an exchange for XL, with return shipping on us. If anything is still wrong, write to me at ivana@yourstore.com."

Answer positive reviews too, with a detail from the text. The same template under every review looks automated.

Important: in CloudCart the customer is not notified when the store replies. If the review is about a problem, also email them. The store replies from the product page while logged in with a staff account, or through the API.

Do product reviews help SEO?

Yes, product reviews help SEO in two ways: they add fresh text in the words customers search with, and they make stars possible in Google. "Warm, but the sleeves are long for someone 165 cm tall" is a long-tail query no supplier description contains.

When stars show in Google

Stars (a review snippet) come from schema.org structured data, code that tells search engines what the page holds. For a product, the aggregateRating property (average and count) and review sit inside the Product data. Google's review snippet guidelines matter to a store in three ways:

  • Reviews of a specific product on its own page are eligible, and the reviews must be visible there.
  • Reviews of your own business (Organization or LocalBusiness) on your own site are not, even through a widget. Home page testimonials earn no stars.
  • Fake reviews and undisclosed rewarded reviews can lead to a manual action.

Google decides whether to show stars even when the code is right. Test one product URL in the Rich Results Test, then watch the Product snippets and Review snippets reports, as shown in Google Search Console for an online store. The rest of product page SEO is in the ecommerce SEO checklist.

Google reviews for your business

Google Business Profile reviews are about the company and matter most with a physical shop or a pickup point. Add the profile's review link to a second email after the product request, and send it to every customer: Google Maps content policy forbids asking only the customers you expect to rate you well, and forbids any reward, discounts included.

How to use reviews in Meta, Google Ads and TikTok ads

Reviews make ads more convincing because the shopper reads another buyer's words, not the store's.

ChannelHow reviews are usedWhat you need
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)A review quote on the image, a carousel of 3 to 5 quotes, retargeting with the strongest reviewA concrete detail ("fits at 170 cm"), and the author's permission if the name shows
Google AdsSeller ratings under text ads; a review quote in the copyPer Google Ads Help, most merchants get a rating after 100+ eligible reviews from the last 24 months, shown in text ads at 3.5 or above. Ratings come from Google Customer Reviews and review partners, not from your product pages
TikTokA customer video (UGC) with the product; a video answer to a frequent questionWritten consent; the product in the first 2 to 3 seconds

Your own questions and answers are the best source of ad copy: they say what the shopper fears. Campaign setup is in Facebook and Instagram ads, Google Ads for an online store and TikTok ads.

How to show reviews on mobile

On a phone the shopper decides by the stars next to the price and the first 2 or 3 reviews, so they must show without much scrolling.

  • Stars and count by the price. "4.6 from 38 reviews"; a 5.0 from one review convinces nobody.
  • Stars on category pages with Show product list rating.
  • Newest first, so shoppers see the product still sells.
  • No "0 reviews" line, with Hide rating if no reviews.

The full phone check is in the mobile version of an online store.

Do AI assistants quote product reviews?

Yes, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews summarise ratings and cite review sites when they recommend a store or product. When we asked GPT-5.5 with web search and Gemini 2.5 with Google Search for opinions about CloudCart, both cited software review sites next to cloudcart.com. To get quoted:

  • Written reviews on product pages. AI quotes sentences, not numbers.
  • Answered questions on the product, ready passages for long ChatGPT questions.
  • The same rating and facts in your store, Google Business Profile and review sites.
  • Replies to negative reviews, since AI often lists "the cons".

Reviews through an AI assistant

An AI assistant such as Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor, connected to your CloudCart store with a PAT token (Personal Access Token, the key with the permissions you choose), reads reviews, groups complaints, drafts replies and publishes the ones you approve. The CloudCart admin API covers the review list, rating summaries, status changes, replies and adding reviews.

TaskWhat you tell the assistant
Weekly check"Show last week's 1 to 3 star reviews grouped by complaint."
Missing social proof"Which of our 20 best sellers have fewer than 5 reviews?"
Replies"Draft replies to new negative reviews with our 5 steps for my approval."
Moving reviews"Add the reviews from reviews.csv to the matching products with their original dates."
Better copy"What do customers ask about this product? Suggest additions to the description."

Reading needs a read-only token; replies and moving reviews need write access.

Review metrics: what to track every week

Five metrics show whether reviews work, all calculated from store data.

Fake reviews: what EU law and Google say

Fake and bought reviews are banned in the EU and by Google, and a store must say whether and how it checks that reviews come from real buyers. Since 28 May 2022 every EU country, Bulgaria included, applies the review rules of Directive (EU) 2019/2161, the Omnibus Directive:

  • A trader showing reviews must say whether and how it ensures they come from people who bought or used the product.
  • Claiming reviews are from real buyers without reasonable and proportionate checks is banned.
  • Posting or commissioning fake reviews, or misrepresenting real ones, for example by showing only positive ones, is banned.

In CloudCart, "Only purchased the product" is that reasonable check. State it in your terms and conditions or by the reviews: "Only customers who bought the product from our store can leave a review". Google removes fake and rewarded reviews from Maps under the same content policy, and shoppers spot identical texts anyway.

Built-in reviews or Yotpo

For most stores the built-in Product Reviews app is enough; Yotpo makes sense when you need photo and video reviews and already pay for Yotpo. Both are in Apps.

Product Reviews (built in)Yotpo
PriceIncluded in the plansA separate Yotpo subscription
Photos and videoNoYes, by Yotpo plan
Questions and answersYesYes

Important: turning on one app does not turn off the other. If you move to Yotpo, disable Product Reviews to avoid two review blocks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Keeping the 7-day review window. It expires before the product is used.
  • Asking on the day of the order. There is nothing to rate yet.
  • Hiding every negative review. A 5.0 from 40 reviews looks arranged and can breach EU rules.
  • Deleting instead of hiding. Deletion is permanent.
  • Two review apps at once. Two different ratings for one product.

Reviews are one of the steps in the plan to increase online store sales.

Frequently asked questions

Ask every buyer a few days after delivery with an automated email that links straight to the form. Add the request to the customer account and a QR card to the parcel, and reply to reviews.

Within 24 hours, publicly and briefly: thank the customer, name the problem, say what you are doing and give a direct contact. Agree the solution privately and never delete the review.

Yes. They add text in customers' words and can bring stars to Google through the product's aggregateRating data. Google shows stars at its discretion and only for product reviews.

At least 5. A product with 5 reviews is 270% more likely to be bought than one with none, per the Spiegel Research Center. Start with your 20 best sellers.

On your own product pages, only if every review gets it whatever the rating and you say so clearly. Rewards only for positive reviews are banned under EU rules, and Google allows no reward at all for Google reviews.

Yes, without a ready-made import: with Add new review in Apps → Product Reviews → Reviews or through the API, which an AI assistant with a PAT token can do from an exported file.

No. If the review is about a problem, also email the customer. Help with the setup: support@cloudcart.com.
