In short: a WooCommerce migration without losing SEO takes 6 steps: list the old URLs, export, import, build a 301 redirect map, place a test order and switch the domain. Sales don't stop, because the new store is built on the side. When you move to CloudCart, our team migrates the products, customers and orders in up to 45 days, for €0 with a 24-month contract, through Dec 31, 2026.
A WooCommerce migration is moving the products, customers, orders, content and old URLs of a WordPress store to another platform, so the store keeps its domain and its Google rankings. This guide is for owners of a working WooCommerce store who sell in or from Bulgaria, or across the EU. The facts about CloudCart, the Bulgarian ecommerce platform, come from the store migration page and the admin documentation. The advice on Google follows Google Search Central's guide to moving a site with URL changes.
When is it time to leave WooCommerce?
It is time to leave WooCommerce when looking after the site takes more of your week than selling does. The plugin is open source, but you are responsible for WordPress, the hosting, security and every plugin on its own. The usual signs:
- Updates break the store. A payment or shipping plugin updates and the cart stops working.
- Security is your job. According to Patchstack's report on WordPress security, 96% of the vulnerabilities found in 2024 were in plugins.
- The hosting can't take the peaks. On Black Friday the site slows down exactly when traffic costs the most.
- The costs pile up. Hosting, paid plugins, yearly licenses and a developer on call, set against the fixed CloudCart plan prices.
A hosted platform includes hosting, the SSL certificate and updates, with couriers, invoices and payments built in.
What moves from WooCommerce and what doesn't
Products, customers, orders, blog posts and old URLs all move; customer passwords, the theme and the plugins don't.
| Data | Where it is in WooCommerce | How it goes into CloudCart |
|---|---|---|
| Products, variations, images, categories | Products → All Products → Export (CSV) | The WooCommerce Importer app or our team |
| Customers: name, email, group | WooCommerce → Customers → Download | Customers → Import, or our team |
| Order history | The WordPress database | Moved by our team and kept separately with us, for reference and accounting |
| Blog posts | WordPress posts | The Blog CSV Import app or our team |
| Titles and meta descriptions | Your SEO plugin | Moved by our team; check them on a self-service import |
| Old URLs | The sitemap and Search Console | 301 redirects from a CSV file |
| Passwords, theme, plugins | WordPress | Don't move |
The WooCommerce Importer turns variations into variants with up to three attributes per product, such as color, size and material. It keeps the category tree with its subcategories, and downloads the images into CloudCart, so the old server can be shut down without leaving products without pictures.
Important: WordPress stores passwords as a one-way hash that nobody can read, so they can't move to any platform. Email customers that they will set a new password at their first login.
What replaces your WooCommerce plugins
In CloudCart, most of the jobs plugins do in a typical Bulgarian WooCommerce store are built in. Before the move, list your active plugins under Plugins → Installed Plugins and note what replaces each one.
| WooCommerce plugin | What CloudCart has |
|---|---|
| Couriers | Econt, Speedy, BOX NOW, Sameday, ACS, GLS and DHL: live rates in the cart, offices, parcel lockers and the shipping label from the order |
| Invoices and Ordinance N-18 | The sales document, invoices and credit notes from the order, and the monthly XML file for the NRA |
| SEO plugin | Canonical tags, sitemap and noindex for filters on every plan; meta descriptions, 301 redirects and llms.txt in the admin |
| Card payments | CloudCart Pay with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay; cash on delivery (COD) built in |
| Abandoned carts and newsletters | Cart recovery emails and campaigns by email, SMS, Viber and Web Push, depending on the plan |
| XML feeds | eMAG, OLX, Etsy, TikTok Shop, Google Shopping, 21 ready connections and your own XML feed for any partner |
| Search and chat | Aura Search finds products by meaning and despite typos; Aura Chat answers customers |
| Caching, security, backups | Not needed: part of the platform |
Econt and Speedy (DPD Bulgaria) are the two main Bulgarian courier networks, and BOX NOW is a parcel locker network. Ordinance N-18 is Bulgaria's set of rules for reporting sales, including online sales, to the NRA (National Revenue Agency). For a plugin that isn't in the table, send your list to support@cloudcart.com before the move.
Ways to move the data
There are six ways to move a WooCommerce store, and you choose by your access to the old store and the size of the catalog.
| Method | When it fits | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce Importer (Apps → WooCommerce Importer) | You have the WordPress admin | Products, variations, categories, images |
| CSV import with column mapping | A file from another plugin or edited by hand | Products, by your column map |
| XML import, one-off or synced | A feed from a supplier or warehouse | Products, prices, stock |
| Separate CSV imports | After the products | Customers, blog posts, redirects |
| Admin API (Starter Pack and up) | Your developer checks every record | Products, images, categories, customers, posts, redirects |
| Our team, through the old store's API or the site | No time, no export, limited access | All of the above plus order history |
These imports are on every plan; the CSV limit is 100 products on Baby Pack, 2,000 on Starter Pack, 7,500 on CC Pro and 10,000 on CC Master. The customer import asks for a two-factor code. More on each platform is on the page on migrating from any platform.
How to migrate an online store from WooCommerce: 6 steps
Follow the steps in order: most traffic losses come from switching before the redirects are ready, or from never listing the old URLs.
- List every old URL. Download the sitemap (
/wp-sitemap.xml, or/sitemap_index.xmlwith an SEO plugin). From Search Console, export 12 months of the Performance report, Pages tab, and the top linked pages from the Links report. - Export the data. Use the built-in export in Products → All Products → Export, with all columns and variations; files from export plugins order the columns differently and won't import. Download the customers and back up the database and images.
- Import into the new store. Build it on a temporary address while the old store sells. Upload the CSV in Apps → WooCommerce Importer; each upload restarts the import, so test a sample first. Customers go in through Customers → Import, posts through Blog CSV Import.
- Build the redirect map. Old URL to new: product to product, category to category, post to post, in one CSV file with two columns.
- Test. Compare counts of products, variants, customers and categories, place a test order with every payment method and courier, and open 20 to 30 old URLs.
- Switch the domain. At a quiet time, such as a weekday evening. The redirects start working at once. Submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console for 60 days.
How to keep your Google rankings: 301 redirects
A 301 redirect tells Google a page has moved permanently, and it is the step that keeps your rankings. According to Google's documentation on redirects, it is a strong signal that the new URL is the one to show in results. Google's site move guide says to keep redirects for at least 1 year. Without one, the old URL returns a 404 and drops out of the results.
Default WooCommerce URLs
Check yours under Settings → Permalinks in WordPress.
| Page type | WooCommerce URL | Redirects to |
|---|---|---|
| Product | /product/espresso-coffee-1kg/ | The same product |
| Category | /product-category/coffee/ | The same category |
| Product tag | /product-tag/arabica/ | The closest category |
| Post or page | /how-to-make-espresso/, /delivery/ | The same post or page |
| Deleted product | No new equivalent | Its category or a replacement, never the homepage |
The 301 redirect checklist for a migration
| Check | How |
|---|---|
| Every old URL is listed | Sitemap plus 12 months of Search Console, without duplicates |
| Top URLs checked by hand | The top 50 to 100 by clicks, before the switch |
| One to one | Blanket redirects to the homepage can count as soft 404s |
| No chains | Each old URL goes straight to the final new one |
| Trailing slash | CloudCart tries both versions, so you enter each URL once |
| Whole sections | The * wildcard, for example /product-tag/* |
| Ad parameters | gclid, fbclid, utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign carry over; utm_term and utm_content don't |
| No 404 errors | Indexing → Pages in Search Console weekly, for 60 days |
In CloudCart, redirects are under Marketing → SEO → 301 redirects, added one by one or uploaded from a CSV file. A redirect added by hand with the type Product or Category follows that record if its URL changes later; CSV rows point to a fixed URL. More is in the guide to SEO for an online store.
Important: PDF files and images don't go through the redirects. Upload important PDFs to the new store and update the links you control.
Do you have to stop selling during the migration?
No. The old store sells until the domain points to the new one. Only catalog edits pause in the last week, so you don't add products twice.
- 7 days before. Stop changing URLs and categories in WooCommerce; keep new products on a list for later.
- 2 days before. Lower the DNS caching time (TTL) to about 5 minutes and check the mail records (MX).
- The switch. Bring over the last orders with an extra import, point the domain, wait for the SSL certificate, which is issued automatically, and place a real card order and a COD order. Open
/robots.txt:Disallow: /means the store is closed to Google, which CloudCart does automatically on a trial or expired plan, so activate the plan first. - After 2 to 4 weeks. Shut down the old hosting once Search Console shows no new 404s.
What to check for SEO before and after the switch
Before the switch, protect what makes pages rank; after it, confirm Google finds the new pages.
Before the switch
- Move titles, meta descriptions, category texts and image alt text unchanged.
- Keep the menu structure and internal links as far as the theme allows.
- Keep the store on the temporary address hidden from search engines.
- Find images embedded in descriptions with
/wp-content/uploads/; gallery images move, embedded ones break when the old hosting stops.
After the switch
- Submit
sitemap.xml, generated automatically under Marketing → SEO → Sitemap. You don't need the Change of Address tool: Google's help page says it is for moving to another domain or subdomain. - Compare clicks per page with the period before; on a small or medium site most pages move within a few weeks.
- Check that Google Analytics 4 and your pixels record purchases.
- Write
llms.txtunder Marketing → SEO → Llms.txt file, telling ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI assistants what you sell.
If Google traffic drops after the migration
A dip in the first 2 to 4 weeks is normal. If clicks are still well down after a month, check these causes in order.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No page gets indexed | Disallow: / or a leftover noindex | An active plan, then check /robots.txt |
| Many 404 errors | Old URLs without a redirect | Upload the missing URLs as CSV |
| Old URLs land on the homepage | Blanket redirect, read as soft 404 | One URL to one page |
| Only categories dropped | Shortened category texts or titles | Restore them from the old store |
| Google Images traffic drops | Missing alt text, broken images | Alt text and re-uploaded images |
| Redirect leads to a redirect | Old WordPress chains | Point every row to the final URL |
Example: migrating a store with 1,500 products
A store with 1,500 products needs at least Starter Pack, which holds up to 2,000. The figures are an illustration: 4,200 variations come in one CSV file, 60 categories map one to one, 300 tags go to the closest category with one /product-tag/* row, and 120 posts go through Blog CSV Import. That makes about 1,700 rows in the redirect map, which takes the most time; checking the top 100 by clicks by hand keeps the risk small. With 2 couriers and 3 payment methods, you place 6 test orders.
How long does a WooCommerce migration take?
From a few days for a store with a few hundred products to several weeks for thousands of products with a blog; tens of thousands of products with an ERP move in dated stages. When the CloudCart team does the move, it takes up to 45 days, with a contact person and a dated plan, while the old store sells.
How much does a WooCommerce migration cost?
It costs €0 when our team does it with a 24-month contract, or only your plan when you do it yourself.
| Method | Cost |
|---|---|
| The CloudCart team | €0 with a 24-month contract, through Dec 31, 2026 |
| You, with the import apps | The plan; import limits grow with it |
| Your developer, Admin API | The developer's time; Starter Pack and up, up to 10,000 products at once |
CloudCart plans, billed annually and excluding VAT, are Baby Pack €14, Starter Pack €33, CC Pro €83 and CC Master €249 a month, as on the pricing page.
Which path to choose: our team, you or your developer
Our team fits when you are short on time or the catalog is large: we handle the redirect map, data, order history, testing and the switch, and review your plugins first. You request it in the new store's admin under Services, Migration; terms are on migrating from WooCommerce to CloudCart. The import apps fit when you know the catalog well: the import doesn't change the old store, so try a small file first. The Admin API fits developers who check every record. For other platforms, see OpenCart, Magento and Shopify.
The most common online store migration mistakes
- Not comparing the counts. Go live only when products, variants and images match.
- New URLs without a 301. The fastest way to lose Google traffic.
- An export from a third-party plugin. Use the built-in export, or the CSV import with column mapping.
- Changing the domain with the platform. Two big changes at once double the risk.
- Forgetting email. Carry over the MX records, or mail stops.
- New text and new URLs together. Rewrite descriptions once rankings recover.
What you gain after moving to CloudCart
The store keeps its domain, customers and Google URLs, with less work around it:
- Hosting, security, updates and SSL renewal are included, with no plugins to update.
- Couriers, invoices, N-18, abandoned carts and marketplace feeds work without plugins; you reconnect feeds such as Pazaruvaj, a Bulgarian price comparison site, from the new catalog.
- AURA: Aura Studio writes and translates descriptions, Aura Search and Aura Chat serve customers. More in AI for an online store: 12 jobs.
- Ready connections to warehouse software such as Microinvest, a Bulgarian inventory and POS system, and support at support@cloudcart.com.
The move-day list for any platform is in the ecommerce replatforming checklist, and the courier setup in WooCommerce with Econt and Speedy. Create a store for €1/month for the first 3 months.
Frequently asked questions
List every old URL, move titles and texts unchanged, and set a 301 from every old URL to the same page in the new store. Watch 404s in Search Console for 60 days and keep the redirects for at least 1 year.
A move by the CloudCart team is €0 with a 24-month contract, for requests through Dec 31, 2026. On your own you pay only the plan, €1/month for the first 3 months for new stores through Dec 31, 2026.
Yes. Customers move from a CSV file or through our team, and the order history is moved by our team and kept separately. Passwords don't move, so customers set a new one at first login.
No. The new store is built on a temporary address and the old one sells until the domain switches. Only stop changing URLs and categories in the last week.
A dip in the first few weeks is normal. With a one-to-one 301 for every URL and unchanged texts, rankings come back; if not after a month, check /robots.txt, 404s and homepage redirects.
No. The domain is pointed to the new store and SSL is issued automatically. Email stays with its provider; add its MX records in the domain settings.
