In short: Google Ads for an online store costs whatever budget you set. Google charges no monthly fee, you pay per click, and a click on product searches in Bulgaria costs roughly $0.23 to $1.10. It sells when purchases are reported back to Google Ads, the account starts with a Search campaign for specific products, and Performance Max makes sense once you have about 15 conversions in 30 days.
Most top results for "google ads for ecommerce" are agency guides for the US market. They skip what decides whether a store in Bulgaria or elsewhere in the EU makes money: consent for EU visitors, where Shopping ads actually run, and checking Google's numbers against real orders. Below: cost per click, a budget from your margin, campaign types, tracking in CloudCart and metrics. CloudCart facts come from the platform documentation, Google's rules from the Google Ads Help Center.
What Google Ads is and how it works for an online store
Google Ads is Google's paid advertising system: ads in Google Search, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, Maps and partner sites. You pay when someone clicks, and the price is set in an auction every time someone searches.
Your position depends on Ad Rank: your bid, the quality of the ad and landing page, and the context of the search. Quality Score, from 1 to 10 per keyword, is built from expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience (Google Ads Help: About Quality Score). A store with a better product page can pay less for the same position than a competitor with a higher bid.
Google's strength for a merchant is intent. Someone typing "running shoes size 43" already wants to buy, and the ad's job is to show that exact product with its price and stock.
How much Google Ads costs: cost per click and budget
Google Ads has no minimum spend and no monthly fee. On a given day a campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget, but over a month you are not charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget (Google Ads Help: About average daily budgets).
Cost per click for product searches in Bulgaria
The table uses Google Ads keyword data for Google.bg (through DataForSEO), in US dollars. Shoppers search in Bulgarian, so the meaning is in brackets.
| Search on Google.bg | Searches per month | Average CPC | Top-of-page bid range |
|---|---|---|---|
| parfyumi (perfumes) | 18,100 | $0.47 | $0.14 to $0.48 |
| maratonki (sneakers) | 9,900 | $0.39 | $0.13 to $0.37 |
| damski rokli (women's dresses) | 5,400 | $0.23 | $0.07 to $0.26 |
| kafe na zarna (coffee beans) | 2,900 | $0.54 | $0.15 to $0.52 |
| hranitelni dobavki (supplements) | 1,900 | $0.81 | $0.29 to $0.90 |
| kozmetika online (cosmetics online) | 50 | $1.10 | $0.21 to $0.73 |
The Bulgarian phrase for "Google advertising" costs $14.61 per click, because agencies bid on it. If you also sell into Romania, Greece or Germany, check those countries separately in Keyword Planner: each is its own auction.
A budget worked back from the order
- Average order and margin. Example: a €50 order at a 40% gross margin leaves €20. That is your maximum cost per order (CPA).
- Break-even ROAS. ROAS is ad revenue divided by ad cost. Break-even is 1 ÷ margin = 1 ÷ 0.4 = 2.5.
- Maximum cost per click. At your store's conversion rate (from CloudCart Analytics), say 1.5%, an order needs about 67 clicks: €20 ÷ 67 ≈ €0.30 per click.
| Average order | Margin | Max cost per order | Max CPC at 1.5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| €30 | 50% | €15 | €0.23 |
| €50 | 40% | €20 | €0.30 |
| €90 | 35% | €31.50 | €0.47 |
| €150 | 30% | €45 | €0.68 |
Many small stores start with €10 to €20 a day on one Search campaign with their best sellers and judge it after 30 days.
Search, Shopping or Performance Max: which campaign for an online store
| Search | Shopping | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Text ads in Google Search | Product cards in Search and the Shopping tab | All Google placements, from Search to YouTube |
| What you control | Keywords, ad text, bids | Products and bids | Goal, budget, assets, audience signals |
| Search terms you see | All | Most | Partial, grouped |
| When | From day one | If your target country is on Google's list | After about 15 conversions in 30 days |
Start with Search: you choose the keywords and see every search. Performance Max splits one budget across every Google placement by itself, so you see less of where the money goes. Add it once purchases are tracked and the data is there.
Important: Bulgaria is not in Google's list of countries for Shopping ads, while Romania, Greece, Germany, Austria and most of the EU are (Google Merchant Center Help: supported countries). A store that ships abroad can run Shopping ads there with a feed in the local language and currency. In Bulgaria, Search and Performance Max with text, images and video run now.
What to have ready before your first ad
- A Google Ads account at ads.google.com in Expert mode, with your company details.
- Purchase tracking through GA4 or Google Tag Manager (next section). Without it Google cannot tell which click brought an order.
- Cookie consent. For visitors in the European Economic Area, Google expects consent mode, which passes the visitor's choice to Google's tags (Google Ads Help: About consent mode). In CloudCart: Apps → GDPR, Cookies, with the "Google Consent Mode" group switched on (it is off by default).
- Product pages with image, price, delivery cost, stock and "Add to cart" on the first phone screen.
- Payment without friction. Apple Pay and Google Pay save typing a card. Many Bulgarian shoppers still choose cash on delivery with Econt or Speedy (Bulgarian couriers), so keep it on.
- A list of 20 to 50 products with recent orders, stock and a margin above 30%.
How to track sales from Google Ads in CloudCart
Sales are tracked with a "Purchase" conversion action that receives the number and value of orders. CloudCart sends the purchase event once per order, so a reloaded thank-you page does not count twice.
Method 1: import purchases from Google Analytics 4
- GA4 in the store. Apps → Google Analytics → Settings, paste the
G-XXXXXXXXXXMeasurement ID. CloudCart then sendsview_item,add_to_cart,begin_checkoutandpurchaseby itself (details in Google Tag Manager and GA4 for an online store). - Link and import. In GA4: Admin → Product links → Google Ads links. In Google Ads: Goals → Conversions → New conversion action → Import → Google Analytics 4, select
purchase. - Primary action. Make "Purchase" primary; keep add to cart secondary.
Method 2: a conversion tag in Google Tag Manager
- Container and data. Apps → Google Tag Manager with the
GTM-XXXXXXXID, plus Apps → Data Layer, which gives GTM the product, cart and order data. - The tag. A "Google Ads Conversion Tracking" tag with your Conversion ID and label, fired on
purchasewith the order value and currency, plus a "Conversion Linker" tag on all pages. - Test. GTM Preview works on the CloudCart storefront. Place a test order and check the tag fires once with the right amount.
Enhanced conversions send Google the buyer's email or phone hashed with SHA256 and make reporting more accurate (Google Ads Help: About enhanced conversions). They are set up in the GTM tag.
Important: never run both methods as primary actions for the same purchase. Every order then counts twice and Google bids for the wrong shoppers.
How to set up Google Ads: your first Search campaign step by step
- Goal and type. Goal "Sales", type "Search". Switch off Search Partners and the Display Network.
- Location and language. Your selling countries, "Presence: people in or regularly in your included locations". For Bulgaria pick Bulgarian and English, since many people, expats included, use Google in English.
- Three ad groups. Brand, best sellers, categories, each linking to the page that matches the search. The home page is only for the brand.
- Keywords. 5 to 15 per group in phrase or exact match, for example
"running shoes"and[men's running shoes size 43]. Leave broad match until after 30 orders. - Negative keywords from day one: "second hand", "repair", "jobs", "for rent" and products you do not sell, in every language you advertise in.
- The ad. A responsive search ad with up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90: product, price, delivery time, payment options and "Free shipping over €50" if you offer it.
- Bidding. "Maximize conversions" first. At 15 conversions in 30 days move to Target ROAS (Google Ads Help: About Target ROAS), a little above break-even, for example 300% at a 40% margin.
- Weekly review of the search terms report: terms with clicks and no orders become negatives.
Performance Max (PMax) for an online store: when and how
- The feed. From the Google Shopping app or Apps → XML Feed → Google, regenerated automatically every few hours. The Google Merchant feed holds 100 products on Baby Pack, 2,000 on Starter Pack, 7,500 on CC Pro and 10,000 on CC Master.
- Asset groups per large category, with at least 5 images, a short video and category-specific headlines.
- Audience signals: your customer list and the searches people use for your products.
- Value bidding: "Maximize conversion value", then Target ROAS. Change budget or target at most once a week; Google advises waiting 1 to 2 conversion cycles after value reporting changes.
Keep Search for the brand and best sellers, where you want to see every keyword, and let Performance Max look for new buyers.
Google remarketing: ads with the products a shopper viewed
Dynamic remarketing shows past visitors the products they viewed. In CloudCart it is Apps → Google Dynamic Remarketing: enter the "Google Ads tracking ID" (AW- is added if you paste only digits) and "Conversion label" from the Google Ads tag, and choose Retail, which takes product data from Merchant Center. For business data campaigns, Apps → XML Feed → Google AdWords gives a CSV feed at /google-adwords.csv. Do not run the app and a GTM remarketing tag for the same AW-… ID.
Remarketing costs a click each time; an abandoned cart reminder reaches the same person with no click cost, and Marketing Suite sends email and web push campaigns to subscribers.
Google Ads, Meta, TikTok and email: what each channel does for your store
| Channel | Role | How CloudCart recognises the order |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | People already searching for the product | gclid, gad_source, gbraid, wbraid |
| Meta Ads | New demand by interest, video, catalog ads | fbclid |
| TikTok Ads | Short video, dynamic catalog ads | ttclid |
| Email and web push | Repeat purchases with no click cost | utm_source=cloudcart |
Analytics → Sales by traffic source puts every channel in one table from the store's own orders. Each ad platform credits the sale to itself, so their reports added together usually exceed your real orders. Campaigns are on the marketing campaigns page. Meta setup is in Facebook and Instagram ads with Meta Ads.
Why your store's mobile version decides the cost per click
Landing page experience is part of Quality Score and most Search clicks come from phones, so a slow mobile page raises the click price and loses the order after it.
- Speed: test your most advertised product in PageSpeed Insights, Mobile view. A good Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less.
- Search inside the store: Aura Search finds products despite typos and Bulgarian words typed in Latin letters, so the paid click is not lost.
- Check by device: if phones bring 75% of Google Ads clicks but only 50% of orders in "Sales by traffic source", fix the mobile cart or checkout. Your phone share is in Analytics → Online store sessions by device type.

Which metrics show that Google Ads is making money
| Metric | Formula | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| ROAS | Ad revenue ÷ cost | Below break-even for 2 weeks: narrower keywords or lower budget |
| CPA | Cost ÷ orders | Above your maximum: pause the keyword or group |
| Conversion rate | Orders ÷ clicks | Below 1%: fix the page, price or delivery |
| Quality Score | 1 to 10 | Below 5: a more specific page or ad |
| Share of new customers | New buyers ÷ ad orders | Low: you pay for people who would buy anyway |
CloudCart recognises Google Ads orders without UTM tags, from the auto-tagging parameters, and names the network: Google Search, Search Partners, Display Network, YouTube or Discover. Analytics → Landing pages by sales shows which ad pages sell, and Sales by source / medium covers your own UTM tags (UTM tracking is in CC Pro and CC Master, see pricing).
Important: CloudCart credits the first visit in the session and counts revenue without shipping, while Google Ads by default counts purchases up to 30 days after the click. Some gap is normal; a large, growing gap usually means the conversion tag misses orders.
How an AI assistant runs Google Ads together with your store
Connect Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor or VS Code with one sentence and a key from Settings → PAT tokens. The assistant reads orders, products and stock directly; Analytics reports you hand over as CSV.
| Task | The sentence to the assistant |
|---|---|
| Real ROAS | "Here are the Google Ads export and 'Sales by traffic source' for the week. Compare cost per campaign with revenue from Google Ads orders; my margin is 40%." |
| Products to advertise | "Which 30 products have the most orders in 60 days and at least 10 in stock?" |
| Negative keywords | "In this search terms report, which terms have over 20 clicks and no orders?" |
| Feed readiness | "Show products without an image, without a barcode or with no Google category." |
A group at €20 a day losing money costs €140 a week; a weekly check catches it after the first week instead of after €600. A PAT token can be Read Only, with an expiry date and up to 20 allowed IP addresses. More in AI in your online store.
Google Ads and SEO: what Search Console shows
Search Console (verified in CloudCart through Apps → Google Search Console) shows where you already rank. Keywords in positions 1 to 3: test a lower ad budget and compare total orders. Positions 5 to 20: ads bring clicks while SEO work takes effect. Impressions with no clicks: the title does not match the search, and the same headline will fail in an ad. See Google Search Console for an online store and the SEO checklist.
8 Google Ads mistakes to avoid
- No purchase tracking: Google optimises for cheap clicks.
- Double counting from GA4 import plus a GTM tag.
- Broad match from day one.
- No negative keywords.
- Every click to the home page instead of the product.
- Performance Max before the first orders.
- Daily changes that restart bid learning.
- Ads for out-of-stock products: keep only items in stock in the feed.
CloudCart, the Bulgarian ecommerce platform, puts Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Data Layer, Google Dynamic Remarketing, Google Shopping and Search Console in one admin, with 0% commission on sales. Sales channels are on sales channels. Setup questions: support@cloudcart.com.
Frequently asked questions
Whatever daily budget you set, with no monthly fee to Google. A click on product searches in Bulgaria costs roughly $0.23 to $1.10 by Google Ads keyword data for Google.bg. An agency adds its own management fee.
Set up purchase tracking, create a "Sales" Search campaign, add phrase match and negative keywords, a responsive search ad and a daily budget. Each ad group links to the matching product or category page.
Start with Search, where you see every search. Add Performance Max at about 15 conversions in 30 days, and keep Search for the brand and best sellers.
Bulgaria is not on Google Merchant Center's list for Shopping ads; Romania, Greece, Germany and most EU countries are. In Bulgaria, Search and Performance Max with text, images and video run.
With a "Purchase" conversion action, either imported from GA4 or from a Google Tag Manager tag with the Data Layer app. "Sales by traffic source" in CloudCart shows Google Ads orders by network without UTM tags.
Many small stores start at €10 to €20 a day. The exact figure comes from your maximum cost per order: a €50 order at 40% margin allows €20. Judge it after 30 days.
Performance Max: one campaign showing ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Maps, with Google choosing where and to whom by your goal.
Not necessarily. A store with 20 to 50 products to advertise can run one Search campaign itself with tracking set up and a weekly search terms review; an AI assistant can match spend with orders.
