In short: a good online business idea has visible demand on Google and on marketplaces such as eMAG, a margin that covers advertising and delivery, and a reason for the customer to order again. With little capital, start with digital products, made-to-order goods or dropshipping from a local supplier, and check demand before you buy stock. From Bulgaria, the same store can sell across the EU.
The 11 ideas are sorted by the capital they need, each with a demand check, a margin note and the store features it sells with. The guide is by the team behind CloudCart, the Bulgarian ecommerce platform, for anyone selling in Bulgaria or from Bulgaria to the EU.
How to choose an online business idea
Choose an online business idea by four tests: demand, margin, repeat purchase and delivery cost.
- Demand. People search for the product on Google and already buy it on eMAG (a marketplace in Bulgaria and Romania), OLX (classifieds) or Etsy.
- Margin. Money is left after the supplier price, VAT, fees and advertising.
- Repeat purchase. A second order costs nothing in advertising.
- Logistics. Small, sturdy products ship cheaply across the EU. Clothes and shoes come back more often.
According to Eurostat, 78% of internet users in the EU bought something online in 2025, while 27% of internet users in Bulgaria did not buy anything online that year. The gap between internet users and online shoppers is 33 percentage points in Bulgaria, against 17 in the EU, so the local market still has room to grow.
How to check demand before you buy stock
You can check demand in about a week with Google Trends for the direction, Keyword Planner for search volume and marketplaces for real sales.
- Google Trends: is interest growing? Pick the country, a 5-year period and a few terms for the product. The 0 to 100 values are relative to all searches in that region and period (Google Trends Help). Look for a flat or rising line, in Bulgaria and in one or two EU countries you could ship to.
- Keyword Planner: how many people search? Keyword Planner in Google Ads forecasts monthly searches and the average cost per click. Note the main term and 10 to 20 related ones, in the language of each target market. A high cost per click means advertisers compete for them.
- eMAG, OLX and Etsy: does it already sell? On eMAG, count the sellers, prices and reviews on page one. On OLX, see how fast listings disappear. Etsy shows international prices for handmade goods.
- Google and the margin. Shopping ads above the results mean the search is commercial. Then run the margin formula below and drop ideas where nothing is left.
- A small-budget test. 10 to 20 products, a small daily ad budget for 2 to 4 weeks, and watch the orders.
Check demand for the product itself, such as "soy wax candles" or "personalized mug".
Online business ideas with no stock in a warehouse
Digital products, made-to-order goods and dropshipping need no warehouse: you buy or make the goods after the customer pays.
1. Digital products: templates, ebooks, printables
A digital product is a file the customer downloads after paying: a PDF guide, a template, a printable poster, an audio lesson. No courier is needed, and the file sells in every EU country.
- Demand check: Keyword Planner for "template for…", "planner for…" or "guide to…" in your niche.
- Margin: from the price you subtract VAT, the payment fee and advertising.
- In CloudCart: in Products → Add product you choose Digital product → Downloadable files and attach the file. Digital products are in every plan, and the Membership app can sell access to members-only pages.
A buyer loses the 14-day right of withdrawal for digital content only after expressly agreeing to that before the download (Your Europe), so the checkout needs that consent. Downloads sold to consumers in other EU countries are taxed in the customer's country above the €10,000 EU-wide threshold, declared in one return from Bulgaria through the EU One Stop Shop (Your Europe).
2. Personalized products and print on demand
Mugs, T-shirts, calendars and engraved gifts with the customer's name, photo or text, made by you or a local print shop after payment. How to sell T-shirts and mugs with your own design and no stock is in the guide to print on demand.
- Demand check: Google Trends for "personalized gifts" shows the holiday peaks.
- Margin: the blank is cheap, and the cost is printing and your time.
- In CloudCart: the Product options app adds a text field, a drop-down or a file upload. Customer uploads land in Orders → User Files. Baby Pack includes 5 options, Starter Pack 10, and CC Pro and CC Master have no limit.
Goods made to order or clearly personalized are an exception to the 14-day right of withdrawal in the whole EU (Your Europe). State it in your terms and on the product page.
3. Dropshipping from a local supplier
The supplier keeps the goods and ships them straight to the customer, while you sell and answer to the buyer. A supplier in Bulgaria means delivery in a day or two with local couriers such as Econt and Speedy (DPD Bulgaria). The model is explained in dropshipping in Bulgaria.
- Demand check: eMAG and Pazaruvaj (a Bulgarian price comparison site) for the number of offers and the prices.
- Margin: usually the thinnest of the three ideas without stock, because many stores sell the same catalog.
- In CloudCart: XML sync updates prices and stock from the supplier's file on a schedule, and the Suppliers app keeps each supplier price. Plans hold 100 products on Baby Pack up to 25,000 on CC Master.
Online business ideas with small capital and a small batch of stock
Handmade goods, niche consumables, subscription boxes and gift sets start with a small batch, and you reorder once it sells.
4. Handmade goods: candles, jewelry, ceramics, soap
Handmade goods sell with a story and good photos, and they are a common family business idea. Light items such as jewelry travel well to other EU countries. More in the guide to a handmade online store.
- Demand check: Keyword Planner for the material and the product ("soy wax candles"), and Etsy for the prices of similar items.
- Margin: materials are a small part of the price. Include the hours you spend on one piece.
- In CloudCart: variants keep color and size with separate stock. Aura Studio writes product descriptions, SEO titles and translations, and the catalog also goes to Etsy through the sales channels.
Important: cosmetics and soap have their own rules for ingredients and labels in the EU. Each product is notified once in the EU Cosmetic Products Notification Portal before sale, and that covers every EU country (European Commission, CPNP).
5. Pet products
Treats, toys and consumables for dogs and cats, searched by breed and size.
- Demand check: Keyword Planner for "food for…" or "collar for…" with a specific breed or size.
- Margin: food is heavy and low-margin, while accessories are light and earn more.
- In CloudCart: variants by size, a subscription for consumables with the Subscriptions app, and email campaigns to past buyers.
6. Subscription boxes: coffee, tea, beauty, books
A subscription box is a product the customer orders once and then receives and pays for on a schedule.
- Demand check: Google Trends for "subscription box" and for the category itself.
- Margin: the subscription discount lowers the margin of one box, but the customer orders many times without new advertising.
- In CloudCart: in the Subscriptions app (Apps → Subscriptions) you create a plan with a period and a discount and link it to the product. A new order is created on every date, on every plan with CloudCart Pay.
7. Gift sets, party boxes and vouchers
Ready-made sets for birthdays, Christmas or corporate gifts, built from several suppliers' products. Sets of Bulgarian specialties also suit buyers abroad.
- Demand check: Google Trends shows when last year's rise started, so prepare before it.
- Margin: a set has a higher average order value than a single product.
- In CloudCart: product bundles (on CC Pro and CC Master) combine several products into one, and the Gift Card app sells vouchers with a code.
8. Vintage, second-hand and collectibles
Clothes, furniture, vinyl records and books, each one of a kind.
- Demand check: OLX shows what sells fast and at what price.
- Margin: the purchase price is low, but every item needs photos, a description and time.
- In CloudCart: with stock tracking and selling stopped at zero, a one-off item is never sold twice in the store. On OLX, the listing stops at the next sync after the item sells out in the store.
Online business ideas with a warehouse or production
Food delivery, your own brand and wholesale need more capital, and they are harder to copy.
9. Food, local products and delivery at a set time
Honey, cheese, pastries, ready meals or same-day produce. Food sells often, mostly locally.
- Demand check: Keyword Planner for the product and the city ("… delivery Sofia").
- Margin: food has a short shelf life, and waste is part of the price from day one.
- In CloudCart: the paid Delivery time app lets customers pick a day and time when you deliver yourself, and Grocery Store adds units such as kilograms and liters. Glovo and Wolt deliver in the city in hours.
Food and food supplements have their own rules in Bulgaria for registering the premises and for labels, overseen by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). Food with a short use-by date is an exception to the 14-day right of withdrawal in the EU (Your Europe).
10. Your own brand (private label)
Private label is a manufacturer's product sold under your name and packaging. Minimum order quantities make it the most capital-heavy idea.
- Demand check: all the steps above, samples from two manufacturers, and first selling another brand in the category.
- Margin: usually the highest among physical products, because there is no middleman.
- In CloudCart: feeds for Google Shopping, Pazaruvaj and eMAG from the same catalog, and Aura Search, store search that understands misspelled words.
11. Wholesale to businesses (B2B)
If you already make or import goods, shops, restaurants and salons order larger quantities, more often.
- Demand check: conversations with 20 businesses in your target group.
- Margin: lower per item, higher per order, with less advertising.
- In CloudCart: customer groups with their own prices (3 on Starter Pack, 5 on CC Pro and 100 on CC Master), quantity discounts, a closed store for registered businesses only, and a VIES check of the customer's EU VAT number. More on the page for a B2B wholesale store.

How to work out whether an online business will be profitable
A profitable online business leaves money after six costs: VAT, the supplier price, delivery (if you cover it), the payment fee, advertising per order and a reserve for returns. Work them out for 3 to 5 products first. The same numbers are the basis of a business plan for an online store.
- Price without VAT. If you are VAT-registered in Bulgaria, where the standard rate is 20%, €48 with VAT leaves €40.
- Minus the supplier price. Or the materials and your work.
- Minus delivery. If you offer free shipping above a set amount, it is your cost.
- Minus the card payment fee. With CloudCart Pay it is 0% through Dec 31, 2026.
- Minus advertising per order. The ad budget divided by the number of orders the ads brought.
- Minus a reserve for returns. Higher for clothes and shoes, lower for digital products.
If less than €5 per order is left after the sixth line, the idea makes money only with repeat purchases or a higher average order value.
How to sell your idea to other EU countries from Bulgaria
A store based in Bulgaria sells to consumers in the whole EU, and VAT, delivery, payments and language change when it does.
- VAT. Above €10,000 a year in total sales of goods and downloads to consumers in other EU countries, you charge the customer's VAT and declare it through the One Stop Shop (OSS) (Your Europe).
- Delivery. Speedy (DPD Bulgaria) ships to Romania, and GLS, DHL, Sendcloud and EuShipment cover Europe. See shipping in CloudCart for the full courier list.
- Payments. CloudCart Pay takes Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and Mollie adds local methods such as iDEAL and Bancontact for Western Europe.
- Language. The Multilang app runs a separate storefront for each language from one admin with a synced catalog.
Start with a neighboring market such as Romania or Greece, where Skroutz, a Greek price comparison site, is a connected feed.
How to find a niche for an online store
A niche is a narrow group of buyers with a shared need who search with the same words. It is cheaper to advertise to and easier to rank on Google.
Write it in one sentence: who it is for, what problem it solves and the price range ("name-engraved gifts for godparents in Bulgaria, €20 to €40"). "Owners of large dogs" is a niche, "pet owners" is a market.
Product ideas come from 2- and 3-star reviews on eMAG and Etsy, where buyers write what is missing, and from questions in interest groups.
How to test a business idea with a real store
An idea is proven by orders: in 4 weeks, a store with 10 to 20 products and a small ad budget tells you more than months of planning.
- Week 1: the store. Theme, domain, couriers and card payments. The basic steps are in the guide how to start an online store in Bulgaria.
- Week 1: the products. Upload 10 to 20 products with your own photos and descriptions.
- Week 2: traffic. Small daily ads to 2 or 3 products, plus interest groups.
- Weeks 3 and 4: the numbers. Sessions, add-to-carts and orders in the store reports.
- End of the month: the decision. Keep the idea that brings orders and drop the rest.
You can also build the store with an AI assistant: with Claude Code, ChatGPT/Codex or Gemini CLI and a PAT token from the admin, you describe what you sell in one sentence and the assistant builds it.
